Las mariposas del recuerdo (2018)

Las mariposas del recuerdo, for solo guitar, was premiered in Alicante (Spain) in June 2018. It was commissioned by Jesús Ortega and dedicated to the memory of the musician and writer Manuel Montiel, who was a close friend of both the composer and the commissioner and wrote a novel titled Las mariposas del recuerdo (The butterflies of the memory).

In the novel, music is a constant thread that guides the reader on a journey through time and memory; and avant-garde walks side by side with tradition. The novel is articulated employing successive chapters that apparently do not have any connection and follow parallel stories, but gradually the reader starts creating links and realizing that the parallel stories are just different perspectives of a cosmos where everything is connected and part of a single reality.

The music draws upon self-reflexivity, suffering, resilience, and the struggle for overcoming failure and being able to express oneself, but not knowing if victory is the absence of mistakes or the assumption of an imperfect expression.
